? Frequently Asked Questions

Why did IPC change to BNS?

The Government of India replaced the British-era Indian Penal Code (1860) with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (2023) to modernize the legal system and focus on justice rather than punishment.

When did BNS come into effect?

The BNS, along with BNSS (Procedure) and BSA (Evidence), came into effect on July 1, 2024.

What happens to crimes committed before July 1, 2024?

Crimes committed before the implementation date will generally be tried under the old IPC sections, as laws usually cannot be applied retrospectively for punishments.

Is Sedition still a crime?

Section 124A (Sedition) has been removed. However, Section 152 of the BNS introduces 'Acts endangering sovereignty, unity and integrity of India', which covers similar ground but with updated language.
