Key Legal Principles
Parking Charge Notices (Private Land)
Private parking tickets are not fines; they are invoices for an alleged breach of contract. Under the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012, liability can only be transferred to the registered keeper if strict conditions are met. Always check signage visibility and grace periods (min 10 mins).
Stop and Search Rights UK
Under PACE Code A, police must have 'reasonable grounds' to search you. They cannot stop you just because of your age, race, or clothing. You are entitled to a receipt, and in most public cases, they can only ask you to remove a jacket, outer coat, and gloves (JOG).
Bailiff Powers of Entry
Bailiffs cannot force entry into your home for most civil debts (like Council Tax or Parking fines). They can only enter peaceably through an unlocked door. If you lock your doors and keep windows closed, they generally cannot enter. Do not sign a Controlled Goods Agreement until you have sought advice.
Section 21 Eviction Validity
A 'No Fault' eviction is often invalid. Landlords make mistakes. If they didn't protect your deposit within 30 days, or frame the Gas Safety certificate correctly, the Section 21 notice is void. Never leave voluntarily just because you received a letter.
