Immigration Raids:
Your Rights
Immigration Enforcement relies on intimidation and surprise. Knowing what to do in the first 60 seconds is critical.
1. The Knock at the Door (Dawn Raid)
They usually come early in the morning (5am - 7am). They will bang loudly and shout "POLICE" or "IMMIGRATION". They want you to panic and open the door.
CRITICAL RULE:
DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR.
They cannot legally enter your home without a specific warrant or your permission. If you open the door, they will push past you.
2. "We have a Warrant"
If they say they have a warrant, ask them to push it through the letterbox or hold it to a window. Checks:
- Is it signed by a judge?
- Does it have your specific address on it?
- Is it dated correctly?
If they do not have a warrant, simply say: "I do not consent to you entering. Please leave." Then walk away from the door.
3. Street Stops
If you are stopped in the street or at a station:
- You do not have to answer questions. You do not have to tell them your name, nationality, or address.
- You can walk away. Ask "Am I under arrest?". If they say no, walk away calmly.
- Do not sign anything. They may try to get you to sign aggressive documents. Refuse.
